If your meetings feel like a drag—or worse, a waste of time—you’re not alone. Most leaders struggle to make meetings both productive and energizing. But what if the secret to better meetings wasn’t just about better agendas, but about better understanding how your team works?
That’s exactly what Dr. Randal and Laurie Langley explored in their recent webinar, “The Secret to Better Meetings: How to Structure and Run Them Around Working Genius.” Hosted by Langley Leadership Group, this powerful session dives into how Patrick Lencioni’s Working Genius framework can revolutionize your approach to meetings, team collaboration and organizational productivity.

What Is Working Genius?
Created by leadership expert Patrick Lencioni and the Table Group, the Working Genius model identifies six distinct types of “genius” that describe how people find joy and energy in their work.
Laurie Langley, a certified Working Genius facilitator, explains that while every person can contribute in all six areas, we each have:
- Two geniuses that come naturally to us,
- Two that we’re competent in, and
- Two that tend to frustrate us.
The Six Types of Working Genius
- Wonder – Pondering possibilities and asking the big “what if” questions.
- Invention – Generating creative ideas and solutions.
- Discernment – Intuitively evaluating ideas to determine what will work.
- Galvanizing – Rallying and motivating others to take action.
- Enablement – Supporting and helping others move forward.
- Tenacity – Driving projects to completion and ensuring results.
As Laurie notes, “When you know your geniuses, you know where you shine—and when teams understand this collectively, they can finally work together in flow rather than friction.”
How Working Genius Transforms Meetings
Every project has three elevations of work:
- Ideation (Wonder & Invention)
- Activation (Discernment & Galvanizing)
- Implementation (Enablement & Tenacity)
By recognizing where your team is in this process, you can design meetings that actually make sense for that stage of work.
For example:
- Don’t brainstorm new ideas (Wonder/Invention) when you’re two days away from a product launch (Tenacity).
- Don’t expect decisive action (Galvanizing) when your team is still exploring the best approach (Wonder/Discernment).
This clarity instantly reduces frustration, improves engagement, and gives everyone confidence about their role in the process.
“Clarity on where you are in the process is a huge game-changer. It helps people engage, stay motivated and avoid the confusion that leads to wasted meetings.” - Dr. Randal Langley
Why This Matters for Leaders
When teams operate within their geniuses, leaders spend less time chasing deadlines and more time celebrating results.
The Working Genius framework helps:
- Eliminate meeting fatigue by focusing on the right topics with the right people.
- Increase team morale by giving everyone clarity and purpose.
- Boost retention by helping employees feel seen, valued and energized in their roles.
- Build sustainable productivity that goes beyond busyness to true impact.
Laurie sums it up like this: “When you know what your team members do best, where they get joy and energy, you unlock their potential—and that changes everything.”
